If you’re a longtime reader of Ode To Awe, you must know that I am completely obsessed with Macaulay Culkin. I know, it’s ridiculous and maybe a bit wierd, and the dude is barely making movies but my fascination with Mac started when I was tiny and it’s hard to let things like that go. So, it may come as a surprise that I totally missed his birthday, but really shouldn’t because I’m not like stalker obsessed and I actually have a life. Anyway, I think we really need to start petitioning Mac to make more movies and public appearances. I know it’s fun to be a reclusive turtle, but brighten my life a little with some movies, ok? And one “rumored” appearance in some military drama slated for 2011 on IMBD is not enough!
Check Mac out below partying it up in London a week ago with his brother Kiernan at the premiere of his (brother’s) movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. I’m digging the outfit, what do you guy’s think?
Growing up, my sister, brother and I were obsessed with 3rd Rock from the Sun. Many late nights, they would come home kind of drunk (I was in elementary school going on junior high, they were in college) , nuke some frozen pizza and we would sit down and watch a few episodes, somehow bonding despite our age differences. Although I loved every character, French Stewart’s portrayal of Harry Solomon was so spot on and ridiculous, you couldn’t help but kind of love him the most. What really got me though, was Harry Solomon’s amazingly 90’s wardrobe.
Platform sneakers?!
Plaid pants and the shirt!!
One of my favorite Harry Shirts.. Are those pin-up ladies?
With Sally wearing his infamous fur coat
Seriously, he had the best 90’s style. There has been this so called “90’s revival” for a while now, but grunge wasn’t the only style going on in the 90’s. Harry’s style really epitomized the real style of the 90’s, or at least that of the underground. It was a little grunge, a little club kid, a little skater, but mostly it was just fantastic. Maybe platform red sneakers don’t really translate into my current wardrobe, but I’m sure I can find a way to grab his essence and work with it.
I may have only been a tiny little thing, but I knew what was up in 1989 and that love for one Macaulay Culkin has followed me throughout my life.
My first semester of college, I plastered my laptop’s background (as well as my walls) with various pictures of Mack. I was obsessed. I would run around with butterfly wings and my bottle strawberry blonde hair screaming about my intense love for him ( usually when I hitting the sauce). Not surprisingly, people thought I was nuts. Surprisingly, they still wanted to be friends with me and would actually sit through my long and insane speeches about Mack’s greatness. Even more surprisingly, a lot of these friends were guys. I have a theory that everyone secretly loves Mack. It’s cool, let it out, we can start a crazy stalker fan club together and recreate his Terry Richardson photoshoot. Who wants to join?
Run by Dick Zigun, the mayor of Coney Island, this is the last place in the world you can experience a true 10-in-1 sideshow. Experience a fire breather, a sword swallower, a snake charmer, a mustached man who puts a nail in his nose..Ok, I’m going to admit something here. I can hammer a nail into my nose. Well, at this point, probably not hammer, but after some practice and coercion, stick a nail in my nose. I haven’t done it in so long that I probably would need a little practice to get used to the feeling again, but for a little while, a long time ago, I could do it with ease. ( Do Not Attempt This At Home- seriously). Now you know.
The side show is more than just a place to see some tattooed people do some wild things. The people watching in general is fantastic- rockabilly dresses and 50’s style hair curls, punk boys with their ripped tees and leather jackets, velvet blazers and top hats. It’s insane how much inspiration you can get coming to this place, all while drinking a Coney Island Lager at the freak bar and mingling with the performers.
This weekend, April 2 and April 3rd, the Sideshow (as well as Coney Island in general) opens for the season. It might just be one of the best times to come out to Coney Island; warm weather, boardwalk funnel cakes, fire breathers, bars and the cyclone. A girl couldn’t ask for more.
That’s Marina, and apparently we are the diamonds. She’s a welsh solo artist with an unmistakable voice set to pop-ish/new wavey music. Her videos are super creative and her style is adorable. If you haven’t heard her, check out “Seventeen” and “Hollywood.”
Becoming X is one of my favorite albums of the 90’s. With Kelli Ali as lead singer, Sneaker Pimps were on fire. Can we please bring back 90’s trip-hop and club kid fashion?
