Semi-Precious Gems

I’m a big proponent of  giving and receiving presents for no actual reason. It’s so nice to know that someone is thinking about you, not because they have to, not because it’s your birthday or a holiday, but just because.

A few weeks back, I received just such a present from my boyfriend. He called me after work, and as we were making plans to go see a movie with some friends, he casually mentioned he had a small present for me. I got quite excited and figured he got me something little and cute. When he handed me the cute little box, I was so surprised,  I didn’t expect to get a beautiful silver pendant with semi-precious gemstones. The pictures below really don’t do it justice, it’s much more antique/vintage looking and quite a sturdy piece of jewelry. Unfortunately, I haven’t worn it yet, because I keep forgetting to buy a chain or velvet or leather rope, but hopefully I’ll have some time to do that this weekend.

Heart and Key Rosary

Today’s post comes in the form of a homework assignment, issued by IFB, the Independent Fashion Blogger community started by Jennine Jacob of The Coveted blog. I’m not the most active member, but having a little assignment for my blog is fun, and it’s always interesting to read other interpretations of the same thing. Anyway, the project is to find a prized possession a family member gave you and discuss what makes it special. Since I am in between apartments, and most of my stuff is in boxes, I will talk about one item that isn’t in storage, but is also extremely special.

The Heart and Key Rosary, by Skyler Man, was given to me by my sister and has become my favorite piece of jewelry. I literally wear it almost every single day. When I’m not wearing it, I even confuse my 3 year old niece, who looks at my neck and asks “but where is the key?” as she is so used to seeing it on me. This necklace has become my signature piece of jewelry, a piece of my identity.  It’s special to me for a multitude of reasons. It was probably my first piece of expensive jewelry since I was a kid and it was given to me by my sister, which is the most special thing about it. It represents so much to me, and wearing it reminds me of how loved I am by my family, and how lucky I am to have siblings that are so f*cking cool and amazing, and to have siblings that I’m actually close to, since so many people have such horrible relationships with their siblings and families. And of course, knowing the designer makes the necklace just that much more special, something to wear and keep forever.

Cat Lover

Sometimes, I burst into tears because I just want to hug every cat in the world. I want to put them in a basket, or maybe on a rainbow, adopt every cat in the universe and take them home and roll around with them. Or, maybe I’m getting myself confused with Debbie, the crazy cat loving lady on eHarmony looking for love. Inspired by this ridiculously funny comedy sketch (and surprised how many reputable news outlets online couldn’t do their homework and thought this was real) I decided to round up some cute cat print fashions, and apparently, there are plenty of designers obsessing over our furry feline friends as well.

A Quarter Century Old

I am not a birthday person. Ever since I was about 18 or so, birthdays have continuously made me cry. Not because they’re ever bad but just because birthdays are emotional. It’s irrational and absurd, and I know that, but it’s my birthday and I can cry if I want to. Fortunately, I have some of the most incredible people in my life that make my birthday extremely special every year. Last night, at midnight, my brother, sister-in-law, sister and brother-in-law all sang happy birthday and gave me some amazing presents. At that same moment, my boyfriend sent me a beautiful message and my best friend called me, and it was just a very sweet and special birthday moment. Later in the night as well as all of today,  I received beautiful messages from my parents, other relatives, and all of my other very close friends. It definitely makes me feel silly for getting so sad on the days leading up to today, when everyone made me feel so incredibly loved. Anyway, onto the presents! I got a beautiful, enormous, candelabra from Z Gallerie, and two new pieces from Skyler Man.  All of the jewelry I get from Skyler Man is so insanely special to me, I don’t think I ever want to wear anything else.

I think I’m going to make it a vow to never be sad on my birthday again. I mean, I’m already a quarter of a century old, a little too old to be so irrational. Plus, who can be sad when they’re surrounded by such amazing people? From this day forward, not me.

It seemed like for Christmas this year almost everyone gave me jewelry, which I am definitely not complaining about. Above we have a Swarovski crystal and leather [necklace, bracelet, headband] from my brother and almost sister-in-law. The piece is very versatile, I especially love it as a headband. I also received three pieces from Skyler Man, a new jewelry brand whose designer I have the pleasure of knowing (post about Skyler Man coming soon). I received a silver and pearl claw ring, silver and ruby snake earrings, and a pearl, silver and diamond skull, and black spinel necklace. These pieces are quite special to me, both because of the designer and because of the people who actually gave me these gifts. In addition to these pieces, I also received another necklace, a glass flower that kind of looks like a Georgia O’Keeffe lady part flower. Along with everything else, it was quite a beautiful Christmas. I have the best family and friends in the world.
