5. The Toxic Avenger

What kind of b-movie horror list would be complete without good old Toxie. This movie isn’t for the faint of heart.  Not PC at all,  but the Toxic Avenger definitely epitomizes “cult horror”. If you get offended easily, you might want to stay away from this one. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

4. Army of Darkness

Oh, Army of Darkness, maybe I should have made you number one. One part culty horror, one part Lord of the Rings/King Arthur gone wrong, this is an essential film to watch for a cult movie fix.

3. Rocky Horror Picture Show

It’s not really Halloween until I watch Dr. Frank-n-furter strut his stuff on screen in those amazing platform pumps. Some would argue this should be number one, but as much as I love Rocky Horror, it’s not the campiest of the bunch, and it’s just too much of a quality film. I’m looking for b-movie camp here guys.

2. Bucket of Blood

Jealousy and the Beat Generation, Bucket of Bloody is one part Allen Ginsburg mixed with two parts creepy.  If you want a movie that’s visually inspiring with a plot that includes a jealous insane wannabe artist, this ones for you.

1. Blood Freak

Blood Freak is by far my favorite culty, campy,  b-movie horror film. A 70′s classic that is essentially a PSA against marijuana, it’s one of the funniest and campiest movies in the genre. All you need to know is that there are cool ass leather jacket wearing girls, long-haired stoner dudes and a giant man turned turkey attacking the drug dealers of the neighborhood. As long as you don’t go into this movie thinking it’s 1. well made, 2. actually good and 3. at all scary, you’ll love it!

Today is my daddy’s birthday and he shares the same name as the crocodile character in this Russian cartoon. Growing up,  my family and I would always joke with him and call him by the crocodile’s name. Russian cartoons have so much charm, this one especially has been translated and enjoyed by kids all over the world (especially Japan, they are obsessed with this cartoon).

I know you’re reading this daddy, Happy Birthday, we love you!

So brilliant, creepy, trippy.

The last time I saw this film, I secretly stole it from my brother who had it on VHS. I was pretty young and I knew that I shouldn’t have been watching it, but I watched it anyway. It was insane and some parts were really difficult to watch. But, there were also parts that I found beautiful and interesting and important and I think that it’s something I’ll be re-watching soon, and hopefully the message and messages behind the film will become clear to me now that I’m older.

The film is basically a 113 minute acid trip. Made in 1973,  you’ll think everyone in this movie must have been on some serious drugs when this was written and filmed. But actually, they were. The director, Alejandro (who was also the actor, producer, set designer, costumer designer..etc etc) was on acid when writing the script, and supposedly gave his cast mushrooms during critical scenes (although I wholeheartedly believe they were on something much stronger).

I vaguely remember minuscule parts, but can’t tell if I ever watched it before this weekend. It was a trip.

Anyway, today I bring you The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This is absolutely the epitome of a campy cult movie; the costumes, the sweet transvestites, the musical numbers. I remember being quite young and stealing glances at Dr. Frank-N-Furter on late Halloween nights while my parents yelled in the background that it was inappropriate and to get to bed.  But this was a whole new magical world that was opening up to me, a world that seemed much more interesting then Disney Princesses (although I kind of love them too) and “spooky” Halloween cartoons on Nickelodeon. I was absolutely mesmerized, and when I finally saw the film in its entirety, I was astounded by its sheer brilliance. I have since seen a live midnight showing, with audience participation and live actors, but nothing compares to the real thing.

One of the movie’s majorly brilliant elements is definitely the fantastical costumes. From Magenta’s maid costume, Columbia’s sequin top hat, Janet’s and Brad’s demure underthings, or Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s fetish-esque garter and leather number, the costumes are embedded into your brain and played as much a role as the characters themselves. A little modernity never hurt anyone though, so I’ve updated some of these looks for today. We can all learn a thing or two about sexiness from Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
