I can’t exactly tell what is going on with this faux fur coat. Is the dog attached? Is the dog an accessory? Will the dog come with said coat if I purchase it? Whatever the case, I’m kind of digging Poppy Lissiman’s utilitarian and feminine mixed style. The Australian born designer founded her label in 2009 after being unable to find pieces she wanted to wear in the market. Her fun and feminine clothing has a military and masculine edge and consists of both basic pieces and florals, faux fur, lace and vibrant, gemstone colours. I’m so into her floral patterns mixed with utilitarian army green button down shirts.  For a complete interview with the designer, check out  Fashionary.org  here.

Independence Day Inspiration

Independence Day is coming up, so why not get a little patriotic? Living in NYC, and witnessing the amazing, progressive (although LONG overdue) changes the city is going through,  (Hello, Gay Marriage!!) I’m feeling more patriotic then ever. Inspired by the American Flag, I’ve rounded up clothing and accessories in pretty creams, bright reds, and deep blues.

Cat Lover

Sometimes, I burst into tears because I just want to hug every cat in the world. I want to put them in a basket, or maybe on a rainbow, adopt every cat in the universe and take them home and roll around with them. Or, maybe I’m getting myself confused with Debbie, the crazy cat loving lady on eHarmony looking for love. Inspired by this ridiculously funny comedy sketch (and surprised how many reputable news outlets online couldn’t do their homework and thought this was real) I decided to round up some cute cat print fashions, and apparently, there are plenty of designers obsessing over our furry feline friends as well.

Scotch and Soda, Amsterdam

In my last post, I included a snapshot of the window display at Amsterdam based clothing store  Scotch and Soda. The brand, which has been around since the 80′s but relaunched in 2001 under three new owners, create clothing for men, women, and kids (under Scotch Shrunk). In addition to clothing, the brand also produces a high profile denim collection and fragrance line. They also have something called “home alone” under their collections, although I can’t decipher if that’s just an editorial, connected to their men’s collection, or something else entirely. Either way, any collection that references a movie Macaulay Culkin made is fine by me.

The collections are made up of well-made basics (think chambray shirts, plaid, jeans, etc). The store sort of reminds me of like a Hollister or Abercrombie, except, everything is cooler in Amsterdam. Where as Hollister and Abercrombie market to a certain type of customer with campaigns and editorials focusing on California surfer cool, Scotch and Soda has more of a hipster-eque aesthetic, marketing to the festival going, leather jacket and flower print dress wearing chick. The cutest stuff on the site?  The kids clothing. Any five year old boy wearing a blue blazer emblazoned with gold buttons is too cute and should probably get on a boat asap (and get me on a boat too, it’s hot as hell in nyc today).

YEAH RIGHT!!

One of the things that I absolutely love about Japanese designers is that they take certain risks that others do not. Maybe it’s just that I don’t live in Japan, and they are following a certain trend, but as an outsider, the clothing and originality coming out of Japan is unmatched. The punk, gothic, street aesthetic that seems to run through most of the clothing that I’ve seen is amazing. I think I’m just sick of the unoriginality I see around me, the unoriginality of actresses at award shows, designers that are afraid to take risks, Kim Kardashian… I’m especially so sick of award shows where every actress is wearing the same type of dress that every other actress is wearing that they all wear time and time again. But, I’ll stop griping now and show you YEAH RIGHT!!, a Japanese label established in 2005 by two early 30′s Bunka Fashion College graduates (a top Fashion school in Japan).

YEAH RIGHT!! SS/11 Campaign

large06 YEAH RIGHT!!

The clothes are simple compared to other Japanese brands and the campaign above definitely does not do the label justice. The clothing on display in the pictures are nothing like much of what I’ve seen them put out. One noticeable trait of the label, that is not seen in the campaign above, is their affinity for deconstructed garments. They have something they call “common sleeve” as seen below, where they take two garments and exchange the sleeves. I’ve also seen them fuse two different dresses together, shirts, pants, etc. The results are interesting, a mix of sweet and punk and seem very wearable.

Opticks Everywhere

Arnsdorf by Jade Sarita Arnott Opticks Everywhere Arnsdorf

Hailing from Austrailia, but based in New York City, designer Jade Sarita Arnott’s newest collection “Opticks” is based loosely on her fascination by Newton’s book of the same name. She uses the phrase “Reflections, refractions, inflections and colours of light” to summarize her collection of juxtaposed fabrics of silk and heavy canvas with light and prism crystal designs. I’m both enamored and fascinated by the mirror like designs on her architectural dresses and skirts, and how she pairs them with soft tops in light refracting colours, such as the one above. That skirt is definitely my favorite from the collection, although the dresses are pretty impressive as well. The collection reminds of the prisms of light that shot out of Fever Ray’s concert. I love Fever Ray, her concert‘s are beautiful madness.

Anyway, Click here to check out the Arnsdorf facebook page. Go to “sign up” to sign up for their newsletter and receive $25 to spend in their online store.

P.S. This is completely off topic, but please, someone, anyone, make Kim Kardashian go away.
