I know Halloween was a million years ago, but life is finally settling down a bit and it seems like I’ll have quite a bit more time to blog, so let’s catch up.

For Halloween this year, a good friend of mine, D, and I went as cigarette girls to a few parties in williamsburg, Brooklyn.  D was smart enough to order her costume beforehand, while mine came together at the last minute from odds and ends I owned, and the help of my father who was gracious enough to drill into the sides of a compartmentalized drawer jewerly box to create a cigarette tray. The best part of the outfit? I wore that dress on my 12th birthday. Why my mother wanted to dress me as a velvet Christmas elf for my bat mitzvah is still confusing, as well as why I decided to keep the dress for the past 12 years. Hello, my name is liz, and I hoard ridiculous clothing.

The outfit consisted of: cigarette girl hat, red lipstick and kohl eyeliner, bat mitzvah dress, black petticoat, leggings, black patent winklepickers, fashioned cigarette tray, candy cigarettes and lollypops.

Unfortunately, as great of a job as my father did, the tray was not stable and whenever I forgot to have at least one hand on it, the above occurred. Either way though, the costume was a big hit, with numerous hipsters asking how much I was selling my cigarettes for. Of course they were disappointed to find out the cigarettes were made of chocolate and candy, but I won’t make the same mistake twice. Drunken hipsters are willing to shell out $$ for cigarettes and next year, the plan is to make bank.

Next stop, Vegas?

@Lorena : the dress is very stretchy! It's super short now though, thus the petticoat (and plus it made it very circus performer in the 40's). My mother definitely equated velvet with fancy when I was young..In all honesty, I kind of want to wear this dress everyday Reply

You can still fit into clothing from when you were 12 years old!? That's awesome, if I didn't grow out of mine I probably would have kept a lot and had some pretty great plaid pants. I love your costume, especially considering you put it together last minute - your dress is perfect! I had a few velvet dresses too at the same time (and a matching shirt and pants set haha!), maybe velvet was the go-to fabric for dressing up in the 90s? Reply
