Angel-headed hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection

January 4, 2010

With the Sundance Film Festival rapidly approaching, I wanted to share a film that I’m really excited about. “Howl” depicts the life of poet Allen Ginsburg, his famous poem by the same name, and the controversy that surrounded it. Ginsburg was one of the principle characters of the Beat Generation, alongside Kerouac and Burroughs. The time of the Beats was an absolutely incredible time in American history; filled with amazing literature, poetry, people and fashion. And even if you haven’t read Howl, you’ve probably heard some of the famous lines that have come from it (the title of the post included)

“I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked”

The film stars James Franco as Ginsberg and features the famous obscenity trial that surrounded the poem and book .  Below is a snapshot from the film, versus an actual picture of Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky (poet, and Ginsberg’s long term partner).

If Franco can pull this part off, it’s going to be an incredible film.
